Member Profile: Jim Meyer

Jim Meyer proves you don't need Portuguese ancestry to champion Portuguese culture — you just need to care about community.

A Tennessee native who's called Sausalito home since 1976, Jim came to IDESST with one goal: preserve and increase awareness of Sausalito's Portuguese heritage. Nearly five decades in this coastal town taught him the Portuguese community is woven into what makes Sausalito special.

As Treasurer, Jim ensures IDESST's financial foundation remains strong so traditions continue for future generations. His commitment extends beyond the books - he also chairs the Sausalito-Cascais Sister City Council, strengthening cultural ties between Sausalito and Portugal.

What keeps him involved? Making a difference.

This retired morning person prefers tea over coffee or wine and enjoys a good movie when he's not working behind the scenes to keep Portuguese traditions alive in Marin County.

Requesting Letters for Portuguese Citizenship or Permanent Residency

Letters for Portuguese Citizenship or Permanent Residency are issued to Members who show consistent and active involvement in the organization. This participation can be demonstrated through:

  • Attending and volunteering at events
  • Serving on the Board of Directors
  • Chairing events
  • Serving on committees

A minimum of two years of active participation is required, and the Member must maintain good standing throughout this period. It is advised that volunteers keep a detailed log of their activities and contributions as proof of their involvement. This sustained commitment reflects genuine dedication to the organization’s growth and well-being, which is crucial for the issuance of these letters.
